Jesus ate bread (Matthew 26:26), which has been a common food throughout history. He ate clean meats such as lamb (Luke 22:15) and fish (Matthew 14:19). He may have eaten eggs because of His statement that eggs is a good gift (Luke 11:12, 13). The Old Testament says that Jesus would eat butter and honey (Isaiah 7:15). Luke 24:42 and43 says that Jesus ate broiled fish and honeycomb after His resurrection.
There were a variety of foods available in the Holy Land. Chief crops were wheat, barley, olives, grapes; legumes such as lentils, fava beans, chickpeas; and vegetables such as onions, leeks, and garlic. Life was also made sweeter with fruits such as olives, grapes, date palms, apples, watermelon, pomegranates, figs, and sycamores (a low-quality fig eaten mainly by the poor). The people also raised sheep, goats, and cattle, and fished from the Mediterranean and the Sea of Galilee. Wine from the grapes was the main beverage.
Each day began with a light breakfast of bread or a piece for fruit. Bread was kneaded and baked every day, one of the mother’s main chores. At midday, those in the Holy Land would eat a light lunch of bread, grain, olives, and figs.
The main meal was eaten at the end of the day. Dinner was a one-pot stew served in a common bowl. Bread was used to spoon the stew. The stew might be a thick porridge of vegetables, lentils, or chickpeas spiced with herbs. Meat was only served occasionally, fish more often, mostly when the family had an important guest. Among the wealthy, lamb or calves were kept in stalls so they could be fattened for feasting (Luke 15: 23–30).
Meals were a sacred time when God’s presence was awaited and welcomed in every meal. The people recognized that although they had earned their daily bread, God still gave them all they had. Fellowship in a meal was always fellowship before God.
WHAT DID JESUS EAT? WAS HE A VEGETARIAN? DID JESUS EAT MEAT?
The Bible records Jesus eating and drinking several things throughout His life. The Bible clearly shows that Jesus was not a Vegetarian. He was also not a “Vegan.” Jesus did eat meat, and in fact seems to have enjoyed fish often.
And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. (Luke 41-43)
This verse clearly shows us that Jesus ate a piece of fish. He also ate honey as well, as another verse indicates. On top of that, we know that Jesus ate lots of bread (he broke bread with the disciples). Jesus would have also enjoyed the fruits of the land, such as figs, etc. In fact, Jesus tried to pick a fig on a fruitless tree, but no figs were there. He would have also naturally ate vegetables (as the disciples were picking corn).
Even though the Bible does not mention other meats Jesus may have eaten, it is likely He ate other meat besides fish, as many Jews of the time would have eaten. This could have included meats such as chicken, lamb, red meat, etc.
CONCLUSION: JESUS ATE A REGULAR DIET CONTAINING MEAT, FRUIT, AND VEGGIES
Based on the scriptures in the Bible, it is quite clear that Jesus would have followed a regular diet of fruits, veggies, grains, and meat. He also could have drank fruit juice.
